Greetings, I am Roy Byrd, an Independent Candidate for the Alexandria City Council. My commitment is to provide fresh leadership and concrete outcomes for our community. Concentrating on efficient policies and inclusive governance, I pledge to tirelessly address the concerns of our residents and foster positive, lasting solutions to the challenges before us.

Since 1998, Alexandria has been home for my wife Pat and me. We started as renters and eventually became homeowners, first of a townhouse and then, since 2011, of a single-family house. Our son both attended and graduated from Alexandria City High School.

After completing my undergraduate studies at Purdue University, I was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps and subsequently earned a Master's Degree from the Naval War College. Before settling in Alexandria, my family led a typical military lifestyle, constantly moving and never staying in one place for more than a few years. Throughout my tenure as a Marine, I experienced extensive deployments across the Far East, Middle East, and Europe, at times joined by my family, but frequently alone. I retired from active service in the Marine Corps in 2006 after 30 years. Over the following decade, I worked as an executive in the defense and aerospace sector, and as an executive consultant. I also served on the Dean's Advisory Council at Purdue University, chaired a committee for the National Defense Industry Association, and held various leadership roles within the Episcopal Dioceses of Washington DC, including membership at St. Paul's K-Street.

My civic service in Alexandria includes serving as President of the Clover College Park Civic Association, Co-Chair of the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations, and participating in various community groups such as the Alexandria Police Department Community Advisory Team, the Resolution 830 Low Income Housing Working Group, and the Alexandria COVID-19 Response Group. I have also been a member of the Stream Restoration Stakeholder Advisory Group and the Taylor Run Consensus Building Group. As a co-founder and Chair of The Coalition For A Livable Alexandria, I worked with residents to challenge the City of Alexandria's decision to remove single-family zoning protections in December 2023.
